San Antonio shooting suspect arrested – not a UFC fighter

U.S. Marshals have arrested the suspect in a San Antonio shooting that wounded eight people over the weekend who claimed to be a UFC fighter.

According to a release from the San Antonio Police Department on Facebook, Jenelius Crew, 37, was taken into custody Thursday morning at a hotel in Miami, Fla. Crew is accused of firing a “long rifle” after being denied entry into Rebar, a nightspot in the city. There were no fatalities.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus stated that the shooter was turned away from the bar by security because he was too inebriated. Crew would go on to tell security staff, “Don’t you know who I am? I’m a UFC fighter from California.”

Following UFC on ESPN 10 this past weekend, Dana White was asked about the shooting and the suspect’s claims.

“How f*cking crazy is that sh*t?” White said when speaking to MMA Fighting at post-fight press conference. “This world is just f*cking bananas right now.

“Well, if you don’t think that I heard about that one at 7 a.m. this morning, you know what I mean? I hope it’s not true.”

It turns out he wasn’t a fighter on the UFC roster, past or present.

On Wednesday, the SAPD Homicide obtained eight warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon prior to the arrest, which happened without incident. Crew was booked at the Miami-Dade County Jail.

All eight victims in the shooting—five women and three men, ages 23 to 41—are all expected to recover.
